Hallelujah! Gaper’s Block

May 15th, 2007

You have GOT to check this out! A while ago I submitted a bunch of CTA anecdotes to the online Chicago zine called Gaper’s Block. Yesterday, they were published - hallelujah! — but the best part is that they found incredible photos to accompany them! Here’s the link. The article is called “Strangers in Transit.”

For you other Chicagoland writers, think writers block Gaper’s Block.

UPDATE: the photos were taken by Andrew Huff, Editor-In-Chief of Gaper’s Block.

  1. That is so cool.
Isn’t it fun that the things that everybody else sees and forgets becomes a small part of you?
The fact that you can share them and entertain the rest of us is wonderful.
Your stories were funny and sometimes poignant.
    Thanks!

  2. Thank you! One of these days I’m going to figure out what that kid meant by “praying in Catholic!”

  4. What wonderful observations! Having spent the first nine and a half years of my education in parochial schools, I know exactly what it means to pray in Catholic, but it would be almost impossible to explain.

The story about the little girl with the pencil, and later the crayons, made my heart hurt. Little do we know how harsh words can affect the small people who look to us for so much in their lives.

What a great story about the guy who gave you his transit ticket. I love that!

    Thank you, Cheryl.

  5. Gaper’s Block is an absolutely first-rate online literary outlet. I read it all the time, both to cull the calendar for interesting events and for the reviews and other content. I’m going to read your vignettes today.
    Congratulations. Don

  6. Cheryl -

I’m an avid Gaper’s Block reader. Rarely a day goes by when I don’t check in on it. But I’d missed your Detour story. I’m glad that you pointed it out. I loved it.

I’ve often thought that someone should have a blog or write a book, or both (you just wrote about blooks on your blog) with nothing but those vignettes from the ‘L’. It is almost impossible to take a ride on the ‘L’ and not come up with some little story to tell. Well, I’m glad that you actually took the time to tell it. It is wonderful. And congratulations on the publication. That’s worth the price of an ‘L’
    ride right there.

  7. This came to me from Diane on the Chicago Writers Association forum:

I just read “Strangers in Transit.” Wow! That was just beautiful. I was especially moved by the last vignette and the story about the little girl and her mother. Both raised some questions about human beings and why we do the things we do.
