October 23rd, 2006Okay, I confess. I was slow in getting to this one. But you have to understand that we cycle through the alphabet at the library. We start at A, work through to Z, then begin again. Alexander McCall Smith just had to wait until we got to the Ss.
There’s a bit where Mma Ramotswe is thinking about medical matters:
“Now constipation was quite a different matter. It would be dreadful for the whole world to know about troubles of that nature. She felt terribly sorry for people who suffered from constipation, and she knew that there were many who did. There were probably enough of them to form a political party — with a chance of government perhaps — but what would such a party do if it was in power? Nothing, she imagined. It would try to pass legislation, but would fail.”

I loved the first of Alexander McCall Smith’s books but couldn’t get into the others. Looking forward to finally being able to read your book in a few days (lots of work to catch up on since I was gone for over a week).

If I remember correctly, it was Gus Buchtel that recommended the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency. I liked that it seemed very like a collection of short stories strung together. There is something reminiscent of Jamaica Kincaid which is always a treat.
